On a Bit of a Roll!

This limber was completed earlier today and I am pleased to say that I have already started the Union command base and the next Union regiment! I hope to have them completed by the weekend before I get cracking on another Confederate infantry regiment.

I am rather determined to catch up on this project. I need some scenic items and the measuring tools detailed in the Airfix rules as well as more figures. Let's hope this sudden burst of productivity continues!

Irish Brigade

28th Massachusetts (front) and 69th New York (rear) Volunteer Infantry
It has been a long wait-I can only apologise. Unfortunately my arm has been causing me an awful lot of pain lately, not sure why so it is back to the surgeon to see if he can find an answer.

However the boys from Ireland are finished, taking the Union army to 8 out of the 20 Regiments. Flags by Rofur.

I am now working on another Union Regiment, a limber and command base. Hopefully we can see all of these before the end of April.

Back in the Saddle.

After a bit of a break I have finally been able add something to the collection! I went for the "traditional" all grey and red look for this limber crew. I had actually finished but not based them in January but time has seemed to fly. I am now working on some Union infantry - Irish Brigade actually. Hopefully they will not take so long.

Confederate Infantry in "Butternut"

These latest additions took a little longer than I thought, but at last we have two more infantry regiments, another command stand and (not pictured) a rebel artillery limber. I now have 8 out of the 15 infantry regiments.
The command stand features the mounted artillery figure plus a cowboy conversion. Flags by Rofur (the command flag is for the yet to be painted Florida cavalry).

In the pipeline I have another two Union regiments and for those interested in other Airfix sets, my next post on my In The Grand Manner blog is French "Waterloo" Line Infantry-probably tomorrow when I finish the base-work.

Number Crunching and a Bit of a Milestone

As mentioned last week the decision on how big this collection is to become had to be made. It actually come rather easier than I first thought. The logic is as follows:

I chose a number of 300 infantry for each size. Nothing scientific about it, it conveniently translates into 15 Confederate infantry regiments and 20 Union. Plus that amount of figures would fit nicely onto my gaming table.

After that it is very simple, the rules give ratios for each troop type. For the Confederates that means 2 cavalry regiments (40 figures) and 4 artillery batteries. The Union get 3 cavalry battalions (36 figures) and 5 batteries. Add to that a few supply wagons and "specials" and there you have a reasonable collection. That should be enough to aim to complete in the first half of 2013.

The milestone is what this regiment represents-they were all painted without the need to use the bulldog clips. The injured nerves are slowly mending, I did drop them a couple of times but the good old Airfix figures were designed for a little rough handling. There is a block of forty more rebels under way, in "butternut" this time - the new gray!

More Rebs!

The decision to keep adding units is simply based on the fact that I can only snatch small periods of hobby time. School plays, school open evenings, shopping etc etc. mean the build up to Christmas mayhem is well and truly underway. Precious little "me time" going on!

However, I have managed to paint and base these twenty figures in three evenings. More ambitiously I have undercoated a "block" of forty more to see if painting two regiments at a time works. Actual games will have to wait until 2013 and I do have to make some decisions on how big this collection is actually going to be. More thoughts on this point later.
